the other day i was talking to a three year old girl. we were in the back seat of a car and she was just telling me all the things that happened the day before, last week, five minutes ago. another car passed us and i’m not sure what prompted this but she said, “only boys could drive cars. girls don’t drive cars.” i immediately corrected her. i don’t know if it stuck but i made sure to tell her that both boys and girls are allowed to drive cars and that boys and girls are equal. i just didn’t understand where she got an idea like that. what signals has she been getting that gave her this notion? where did she get them? from whom (male or female)? and what other things did she think only boys were allowed to do? maybe its just one of those things children say when they’re talking and talking.
