in the papers they had a photo of the police searching “suspects” shortly after the SOE went into effect but what were they suspects of? as matter of fact, what was the photographer doing there and why wasn’t he searched? the SOE is eerily reminiscent of the UK’s SUS law where: anybody could be stopped and searched if officers merely suspected they might be planning to carry out a crime. the SUS law impart led to the Brixton riots of 1981 and made it  much easier for police officers to harass black people without being charged of discrimination. When protests erupted in Brixton against SUS this is what was going on: mixture of high unemployment, deprivation, racial tensions and poor relations with police were not unique to Brixton. what is the unemployment rate in t&t? what sort of relationship do residents of these crime hot spot areas have with the police?
