KAISO! (9): ca’naval is cOloUR, ca’naval is HAIR!

Carnival Hair on Calvary Hill, Port-of-Spain, 2011

all de bad talk i bad talk relaxed hair in the past (and probably present), i am in love with carnival hair!* something about the effortless pageantry involved called out to me. what clicked was this: say what you want about black people straightening their hair to imitate whiteness, there is an unprecedented style and character found in black hair care. carnival hair runs the gamut of possibilities from dreadlock mohawks to multi-colored weaves styled and shaped in all fashions.  the real kicker was to notice that carnival hair was not solely a female phenomenon; the fellas sported their share of extravagant hair as well. this was street art at its best. yet, the bearers of these bobs, braids, pompadours and more didn’t behave as if their heads should be made into busts to be placed in museums; theirs was a practical approach. this was a carnival art, gracefully adorning the crown, being noticed and being proud.
*carnival hair- extravagant hairstyles worn during the carnival season that can be unusually colorful.

I confess, this year I fell prey to the 'carnival hair' and loved it! Loved this.
